Mother's Union

Founded in 1876 by Mary Sumner, the wife of a Vicar, who felt that the Ladies in her Parish needed support in their Christian life. Times were very difficult and poverty was rife. She called them together at the Vicarage. The support and fellowship was much appreciated and the membership grew, other branches were formed.
The first Diocesan conference was held at Winchester in November 1887 with about 80 friends and fellow-workers present, to whom Mary Sumner was able to report a beginning full of promises, as a result of two years hard work. The Mother’s Union was firmly established as a Diocesan Society, with the approval and hearty support of the Bishop of Winchester, and numbered 57 branches actually in existence, with about 11 more just starting. It was also taken up in 17 other Dioceses, and fresh enquiries were being made daily.
The Saint Ida Branch commenced on November 27th, 1905 with 23 people being present. Mrs Buckingham gave an address to the meeting and as a result 18 became members with two associates. Numbers fluctuated over the years. At the present time the meetings are held in the afternoon and an evening group, for the younger members, who are either working or looking after their children is held. The Speakers are various with a wide range of topics. Fund raising takes place to send money to those less fortunate in the Third World. This helps them with education, health and hygiene. The“Feast of the Annunciation” on March 25th is the special day, with a service in Saint Ida’s Church
.

 The Mothers' Union Prayer
Loving Lord, we thank you for your love so freely given to us all.
We pray for families around the world.
Bless the work of the Mothers' Union as we seek to share your love through the encouragement,
strengthening and support of marriage and family life.
Empowered by your Spirit, may we be united in prayer and worship,
and in love and service, reaching out as your hands across the world.
In Jesus' name.

Amen.

As a young woman our founder Mary Sumner took a special interest in women and their families. When she started meeting with mothers of her parish in 1876 Mary wrote the first Mothers' Union prayer. Her words are still an inspiration for us today.

 The Mary Sumner Prayer

All this day, O Lord,
let me touch as many lives as possible for thee;
and every life I touch, do thou by thy spirit quicken,
whether through the word I speak,
the prayer I breathe,
or the life I live.
Amen.
